Джон Роналд Руел Толкин е известен като "бащата на съвременния жанр фентъзи". Той е роден на 3 януари 1892 год. в Блумфонтейн, "Оранжевата" република. Едни от най-известните му творби са Силмарилион, Хобит, Властелинът на пръстените. Той умира на 2 септември 1973 год., на 81 годишна възраст. Така и не успява да види най-великата си творба(Силмарилионът) публикувана, която бива преработена и довършена от най-малкия му син - Кристофър Толкин.
